This study linked perseveration errors (repetitive. unstopped behaviour) and cerebral grey matter loss in the schizophrenic brain to herpes simplex infection, supporting a pathogenic contibution to schizophrenia. Several other pathogens have been implicated in this condition, and many susceptibility genes can be related to their life cycles.
