Early-onset dementia linked to adolescent risk factors

A Swedish study involving military men identifies nine risk factors, many of which may be preventable for adolescents, that are associated with young-onset dementia - dementia diagnosed before the age of 65. 
Results from the study show that the major risk factors associated with the early-onset disease included:
  • Alcohol intoxication, 
  • Stroke; 
  • Use of antipsychotics; 
  • Depression; 
  • Father's dementia; 
  • Drug intoxication; 
  • Low cognitive function at enlistment; 
  • Low height at enlistment; 
  • High systolic blood pressure at enlistment.

Benzodiazepines For Insomnia Or Anxiety Raises Dementia Risk Among Elderly

Patients over 65 years of age who take popular insomnia and anxiety drugs, (benzodiazepines), have a 50% higher risk of developing dementia during the following 15 years compared to people of the same age who never took the medication, researchers reported in the BMJ (British Medical Journal).

The United States government would get a better bang for its health-care buck in managing the country's most prevalent childhood disabilities if it invested more in eliminating socio-environmental risk factors than in developing medicines.

Futurity.org – Aspirin may lower stroke risk from trans fat

Older women who eat a substantial amount of trans fats are more likely to suffer an ischemic stroke. However, the risk of stroke associated with trans fat intake was lower among women taking aspirin, according to University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill researchers, who report their findings in the journal Annals of Neurology.

Do aluminum vaccine adjuvants contribute to the rising prevalence of autism?

"Our results show that: (i) children from countries with the highest ASD prevalence appear to have the highest exposureto Aluminium from vaccines; (ii) the increase in exposure to Aluminium adjuvants significantly correlates with the increase in Autism spectrum disorder prevalence in the United States observed over the last two decades ; and (iii) a significant correlation exists between the amounts of Al administered to preschool children and the current prevalence of ASD in seven Western countries, particularly at 3-4months of age . The application of the Hill's criteria to these data indicates that the correlation between Aluminium in vaccines and ASD may be causal".

Healthy mouth bacteria provide ideal conditions for gum disease

Gum disease is a risk factor for a number of other diseases, including atherosclerosis and Alzheimer's disease: When the oral bacterium P. gingivalis was introduced under normal conditions it stimulated the growth of normal bugs leading to a large increase in the number of those organisms already there. P. gingivalis was introduced at very low levels but had a major affect on both the immune system and the inflammatory system.

Several genes that were dysregulated in both individuals with schizophrenia and their siblings related to nucleosome and histone structure and function, suggesting a potential epigenetic mechanism underlying the risk state for the disorder. Nonpsychotic siblings also displayed some differences from comparison subjects that were not found in their affected siblings, suggesting that the dysregulation of some genes in peripheral blood may be indicative of underlying protective factors.

Sudden death and use of stimulant medications in youths. (Ritalin)

This is a couple of years old, but the study showed that Ritalin use in young children increased the possibility of sudden explained deaths with an odds ration of 7.4
A subsequent larger UK study failed to replicate this, but did find an increased risk of suicide with stimulants,  although the effects were small.

This study showed a potential link between trichlorophenols, (related to organochlorine pesticides and other polluants ) and ADHD . Other toxins related to ADHD are shown here.
In these types of disorders, environmental toxins of our own making may shoulder much of the blame.
