The effects of maternal stress during pregnancy can be carried through to the next generation, increasing the risk of the offspring developing heart disease or diabetes later in life. Curiously, these effects (in animal models) depended on whether the father or mother had been exposed to stress - artificially produced by glucocorticoid manipulation.
