Immune Cells Secrete A Signal Molecule That Promotes Atherosclerosis
The molecule is the chemokine CCL17 released from dendritic cells which activate other cells of the immune network. CCL17 in turn inhibits aspects of immune function. The inflammatory response is not switched off and chronic inflammation persists, aiding in the pruduction of atherosclerotic lesions.
