Gatekeepers: How microbes make it past tight spaces between cells

This is done by Toll receptor mediated downregulation of claudins that  keep the spaces between epithelial cells tight. Toll receptors are activated by pathogens and they cause a loosening of epithelial junctions allowing pathogens to slip through.
