Link to increased atherosclerosis risk in lupus patients uncovered
This reserarch showed that interferon alpha caused lipid uptake and foam cell formation that are important triggers of atherosclerotic plaques. Interferon alpha is involved in pathogen defence so could this also be a link between the viruses and bacteria implicated in atherosclerosis and plaque formation ?
