Virology: Keeping HSV-1 dormant - Cell Signaling Update - Signaling Gateway

Nerve growth factor  was recently shown to drive the herpes simplex virus to latency in neurones, and the high affinity NGF receptor TrkA is now shown to be responsible. Just what is needed for preventing Alzheimer's disease perhaps Refs . However clinical pilots with NGF in Alzheimer's disease some years ago showed that there are problems with the induction of neuropathic pain Eriksdotter et al, 1998 . The trials were discontinued and this problem has yet to be resolved.

The effects of NGF are mediated downstream by AKT1,  a difficult target because of its involvement in so many systems
