Maggot debridement therapy, (to clean wounds ) hirudotherapy, (leeches as anticoagulants in surgery) apitherapy ( bee sting therapy in multiple sclerosis) and ichthiotherapy (psoriasis, ulcers and dermatitis) , bacteriotherapy, phagetherapy, (used to kill bacteria), and hippotherapy (autism and psychological disorders) have all been used to treat certain diseases, with effect. Although very much a minority, there is method in this madness, as certain parasites and pathogens appear to have beneficial effects in animal models of immune diseases or in man. Research in this area is certainly warranted.
