Different neurones have different sensitivities to metabolic stress, often related to transmitter metabolism. For example acetyl choline is synthesised from acetyl Coa, the entry point of the Krebs cycle. Glutamate and GABA are also synthesised from glucose, but the GABA shunt returns the carbon atoms used . Monoamine transmitters are not synthesised from glucose. The integration of transmitter and glucose metabolism can determine whether neurones live or die in times of metabolic stress.
