Survey of pet dogs indicates Lyme disease risk much greater than previous estimates suggest

Ticks infected with the bacteria (Borrelia burgdorferi) that cause Lyme disease may be considerably more prevalent in the UK than expected, according to new research from the University of Bristol that used pet dogs as ‘sentinels’ for human disease risk.

Hopefully more awareness will lead to earlier intervention instead of so many patients left undiagnosed and suffering a chronic illness. Some doctors still say there is no Lyme Disease in the UK.

Persistence of Borrelia burgdorferi in Rhesus Macaques following Antibiotic Treatment of Disseminated Infection. Persistence has been found in Mice, dogs and now primates. The IDSA guidelines are outdated and out of date but still followed by our HPA.
