This is a nice example of the conditioning effects of two environmental variables or risk factors. Vitamin E can either be a risk factor or a protective factor in pneumonia, depending on the degree of smoking or exercise. Interactions like this are likely to be relevant to the problems of heterogeneity in gene and risk factor association studies.
