TThe viral theory of schizophrenia revisited: abnormal placental gene expression and structural changes with lack of evidence for H1N1 viral presence

While many studies have shown that prenatal or adult infection can be assocaited with schizophrenia, the doubters point out an absense of viral DNA or protein in post-mortem brains. Here, prenatal influenza infection clearly influences brain gene expression in the offspring - but viral DNA was not detected in the same brains. Cytokines or fever prenatally can also influence brain development Refs  and the effects of infection may be indirect.
