It now turns out that odontoblasts are involved in the immune network producing antimicrobial peptides (alpha-defensins) chemokines, which recruit white blood cells to the site of infection, and pro-inflammatory signalling proteins (Interleukins IL-1β, IL-1α, and the cytokine TNF-alpha) which initiate an inflammatory response.
